Beach Front Gold

Kitchen

We took an outdated Tuscan kitchen and turned into a beach front beauty. Full of storage and better working triangles. Gone is the dark and heavy cabinetry. The huge wood hood was replaced with a modern metal hood from Vent a Hood. Rutt Cabinetry is a light gray with gold hardware accents. Antique mirrors grace the fridge door and the tall cabinetry flanking the sink window. Just this past year we submitted this kitchen to ____ and won 1st place!

Objectives

We needed to update the kitchen with new appliances, fix the layout functionality, and bring it into the 21st century. The old layout just wasn't functional for the client, originally the main sink was on the second island and didn't offer much landing space for clean up. The walkways were too narrow for multiple people coming in an out, and lastly they simply didn't have the right type of storage to accommodate a seasonal home.

Challenges

Every project comes with a new set of challenges. While approaching the layout changes we had a barrel ceiling that the main island needed to stay under or it would throw off the overall proportions of the kitchen. The client was also upset that the bar chairs that faced inwards toward the kitchen and not towards her gorgeous view of the ocean. The entry door into the kitchen swung in such a way that it hinder access to the pantry and while closed it blocked off the other half of the home. The client owned free standing water station and wanted to keep it but it was difficult for them to constantly lug new water and it was un-sightly.

Solutions

Challenges are meant to be overcome, and each one gives us the opportunity to learn and grow. While we struggled with the proportions of the barrel ceiling and island below, simply narrowing the island and lengthening its depth not only kept things aligned with each other but added extra space to the walkways. Two birds with one stone! Extending the bar depth also gave the bar chairs space to wrap around the island giving the client that seat with a view she wanted! Make that 3 birds! The door into the kitchen, was a seemingly obvious solution of a pocket door but it was the only option as there was no excess room for a barn door or sliding door, so we had to grappled with the electrical wiring behind the 2 ovens and pantry that had to be moved and adjusted to fit the new pockets. The water station had to go! We found a built in water station that was sleek and could be tucked away beautifully from Wolf Sub Zero that only only looked better but gave them an upgrade of bubbles on tap!
